Uganda Cup: Black Pirates prove too strong for Impis
The Uganda Cup quarterfinal tie between the Black Pirates and Impis was only going to go one way, but no one expected it to go as far as 68 points for the hosts.o
Impis had stood up to the big boys, putting up a spirited effort against the Heathens, and outclassing the Victoria Sharks at the Graveyard in the group stage. The Pirates, on the other hand, have continued to set themselves a class apart from the rest of the competition, solidifying that with a dominant performance at King’s Park on Saturday.
It took Sea Robbers getting to 20 points for the Impis to respond with a couple of Darren Aine penalties, which only rocked the Pirate ship. William Nkore added a penalty to bring the game to 23-06, before the forwards came to the party with a maul try by hooker Nathan Bwambale, which Isaac Massangazira converted.
By that point, the floodgates had opened, and not even a Pius Mpoza try would console the visitors. Poor defence, coupled with conceding multiple penalties, most of which came from offside, kept Impis on the back foot for most of the game.
Impis were also dominated in the scrum, with the inexperience of the university forward pack coming to the fore against the Pirates’ Bwambale, Ivan Kabagambe and the second row of Frank Kidega and Eliphaz Emong.
The Pirates have earned the hosting rights to the semifinal against KOBs after posting a better points difference against Impis than their next opponent did against Rhinos in the other quarterfinal of the day.
